Taking inspiration from the Assisi Bird Campaign, an international movement to stop bird hunting on Mount Subasio, that issued the Mount Subasio Declaration of 1985, its organizers:
San Francisco’s journalist Bert Shimon Schwarzschild,
artist and activist Maria Luisa Cohen,
and the late David Brower, founder of the Sierra Club,
created the Assisi Nature Council, later joined by Italian environmental organizations and institutions:
